On the Farm with Kids – Caoba Farms Restaurant and Tour
Most of the best things to do in Antigua Guatemala are focused on the things you can see and do while in the city itself. That’s great so long as you’re focused on beautiful Spanish ruins, great-tasting food, and interesting museums! But if your kids are wanting a bit more time in nature, you’re better served by checking out one of the nearby volcanoes or visiting one of Antigua’s nearby farms.
Caoba Farms Restaurant is only about a 15-minute walk away from Antigua’s Central Park Plaza and is easily one of the best places around Antigua to get outside with your kids.

Things to Do with Kids at Caoba Farms Restaurant

Eat Delicious Food at the Farm Restaurant
Caoba Farms Restaurant has a small farm on-premises, but the main draw of this location is the namesake restaurant on its grounds. They serve a variety of fresh flavors derived from their very own organic produce grown right there on the property or at their larger farm outside the city limits. If they decide to serve something that they don’t grow, like the delicious buffalo meat for their all-natural burgers, the owner does his best to source it from suppliers that meet his rigorous standards.
It’s no wonder that Caoba Farms Restaurant is something of a local favorite in Antigua.

Take a Tour of the Farm
If you can pull yourself away from the delicious food at the restaurant, you’ll find a variety of other great activities to do with kids. My personal favorite was getting to take a tour of the farm where they grow some of the food for the restaurant.
Going into the tour we weren’t sure what to expect, but what we got was amazing. Alex, the owner of Caoba farms took time out of his day to show us the whole operation. We started the tour by talking a bit about the history of the farm, and how it got started before moving on to actually getting to do a bit of harvesting turmeric for golden milk. My kids loved getting the chance to get down and get their hands in the dirt, and I loved learning about the growing process and how it all works.

Alongside an impressive variety of plants, Caoba Farms also raises chickens, ducks, sheep, and more! Alex brought us inside the chicken enclosure to see what organic chicken farming looks like before giving us a chance to watch the ducks eat some of the locally grown broccoli, fresh from the field.
The animals that they raise there typically get a very greens-heavy diet, as the produce that is too old or damaged to go to the restaurant gets fed to the animals.
Visit the Mariposario (Butterfly Garden)
At the back of the farm’s property is a small butterfly garden. Technically, the butterfly garden isn’t part of Caoba farms, but rather is rented out space that is being used to promote butterfly education and conservation efforts. When we found out about the Mariposario, we had to check it out!
Inside are a variety of butterfly-friendly plants and a handful of native butterfly species. My kids loved getting the chance to hold some monarch caterpillars and learn more about the importance of butterflies as a local pollinator.

Play at the Playground (Or take a Yoga Class)
If your kids are still brimming with energy even after the tour, make sure to grab some lemonade from the restaurant and let them spend some time playing on the playset. It’s a fairly simple playground set up, with a couple of swings and a single slide, but I know my kids really appreciated having it there, especially as we hadn’t found very many playgrounds in the Antigua, Guatemala area.
If your kids are older, or if you’re looking for something to do yourself, check Caoba Farm’s yoga class schedule and get in some exercise surrounded by the farm’s greenery.
Stop by the Farmer’s Market
Last but not least, be sure to check out the Farmer’s Market on your way out the door!
Every Saturday, local farmers and small businesses set up shop and sell some of the highest quality wares available in Antigua. The Saturday that we went, there were artisan crafts, paintings, all-natural salsas, local chocolates, and even handmade soaps.

If you can’t make it on a Saturday, have no fear! There’s still a local market on-premises that sells fresh produce and all sorts of refreshing goodies.
Finding fun and educational things to do with kids can be tricky at times, even in places where there are plenty of great activities to check out! While it’s not the typical type of tour for Antigua, Guatemala, Caoba Farms does a great job of being the whole package. Not only is it an amazing place to visit for fresh flavors and organic foods, but it’s also an amazing opportunity for both education and fun!
