Prime Day Deals for Field Tripping Families – 2022 In Progress

Before I even get started I want to remind you that you don’t actually need any of this stuff to have a successful family field trip!
That being said, having the right equipment can definitely make things easier, more educational, or more fun. Shopping for that equipment during major sales events like Amazon’s Prime Day sales or Black Friday means getting the most value for your money so you can put your savings towards bigger ticket items like flights and experiences!
Prime Day sales include discounts on tons of different products from a variety of brands, which makes it an excellent opportunity for saving money on almost anything. This page isn’t a complete list of all the deals available, but rather a list of my picks for the best deals for families interested in Family Field Trips.
You can check out all the current deals on Amazon’s Prime Day Deals page.
Just as a reminder, while there are deals that can be taken advantage of by anyone, the best deals are often reserved for Prime Members. If you aren’t already a Prime Member, you can still take advantage of all the Prime Day Deals by signing up for an Amazon Prime Free Trial. Just be sure to cancel before your trial runs out if you don’t want to remain a member.
Amazon Products and Services
Prime Day is first and foremost a way for Amazon to get people to invest in its own products and services, so they are often the products that have the steepest discounts, making this an ideal time to buy.
Kindle Fire Tablets
My family uses Amazon’s Fire Tablets as our go-to screens for all of our kids’ digital needs. They’re great for browsing a wide array of educational apps and websites, reading or listening to books, watching videos, or playing games! They aren’t powerful enough to go toe to toe with something like an iPad or a laptop, but for the price, they do a pretty commendable job.
We especially like having the tablets for travel days when we know we’ll be sitting still for long stretches.
During Prime Day, you can get a Fire Tablet for less than $50, though it can be worth it to spend a bit more to get a larger screen and more memory, or to remove lock-screen ads.

Kindle E-Readers
While the Fire Tablets are great multi-purpose devices, they can have a tendency to do too much. That’s why we also have a Kindle E-Reader for those times when we don’t want the kids to get distracted from just reading!
E-Paper devices like the Kindle are specialized for providing a convenient, distraction-free reading experience that you can take with you anywhere. The newest Kindles are water-proof, backlit devices that can easily store hundreds of books, and which can even be used to read books from the library so you don’t have to keep buying books if your kid is a voracious reader!
The cheapest ones are definitely “good enough” devices, but the better ones have nearly twice the resolution, larger, brighter screens, and can even play Audible audiobooks!
The only problem I have with my Paperwhite is that we only have one, so I often end up going without a book because my son is using it. I highly recommend picking one (or more) up during the sale.

TV Streaming (Prime Video and Devices)
While I love taking amazing and educational trips with my family, nobody can be “on” all the time. Meaning there are lots of evenings when all we want to do is turn on the TV and enjoy our favorite shows. But that’s easier said than done when you’re traveling across the world! Signing into our accounts on whatever streaming device our Airbnb or hotel has is a pain, if it’s even possible. And if we happen to be out of country, our favorite shows might not even be available! That’s why we love traveling with our Firestick.

By bringing our Firestick with us when we travel, we can keep from having to deal with other people’s devices and accounts. All of our media and services stay with us wherever we go! Plus, since it runs on FireOS, we can install a VPN directly on the stick so we can access our US-based services even while overseas. That’s a huge advantage over something like the Roku, which doesn’t have easy VPN access.
Amazon has a variety of streaming devices available, but we use the Fires TV Stick 4k, if you want something you know will just work.

Of course, if you need something to watch on your new FireTV, be sure to take advantage of Amazon Prime Video’s streaming service. As a Prime Member you already get access to a ton of great content, but during Prime Day you can also sign up for 2 month of Prime Video Channels for .99/month!
Audible (Audiobooks)
If you’ve read through my blog, you probably already know that I think audiobooks are a great option to pass the time during road trips. They are great for holding kids’ attention, plus they can be used to get kids in the right mindset for whatever amazing field trip you’re about to take!
Audible is easily one of the best Audiobook providers available, and during Prime Day, you can get a 3 month long free trial instead of the normal 1 month. That’s 3 free audiobooks, just for signing up, whether you continue with their service or not!
Amazon Explore (Virtual Field Trips)
There are a lot of amazing places in this world and, unfortunately, there’s not always time to see them all in person. Luckily we live in an amazing digital age! I’ve talked about virtual field trips before, but many times it can be hard to find experiences that really excel at feeling immersive. Which is why there’s Amazon Explore.
Amazon Explore is a newer Amazon program that offers virtual experiences from around the world so you can visit far-off places from the comfort of your home! While virtual experiences aren’t quite as amazing as being there in person, they can still be surprisingly immersive, and much less expensive.
During Prime Day, Amazon is offering up to 60% off their Explore Experiences, which makes this a great time to check out somewhere new!
Kindle Unlimited and Kindle Freetime
While I’m a really big fan of using public libraries as a source for ebooks, there are some significant disadvantages to them as well. Hit-or-miss book availability, only being able to check books out for a short time, and sometimes clunky interfaces can all be a disruption to the reading experience.
Luckily, Amazon has its own library programs!
Kindle Unlimited lets you check out up to 10 books at a time from their Unlimited Library for as long as you like. That includes books from all genres, including kids’ books and even magazines! We’ve regularly used it as a platform to find books for our kids, and can usually find something they’ll like. But not always.
Kids+ is another library-like program from Amazon that is focused on kids. There’s a wide number of quality kids’ books available through the program, as well as apps and videos. Parents have access to parental controls to help make sure that only content you’re ok with your kids having is available, as well as being able to set time limits.
Both programs are discounted for Prime Day!
Prime Gaming (Just for Fun)
This one is a bit less focused on education. But if you’re an Amazon Prime Member (even just on the Free Trial) and you are looking for some games to play, this is easily the best way to save some money on games that you’re going to find!
Prime members can get a ton of free games during Prime Day by visiting Prime Gaming and claiming them. And even if you decide to cancel Prime afterward, the games stay yours to keep! There’s also a variety of in-game items that you can collect for some of your favorite mobile and online games, as a bonus for being a Prime Member.
It’s a really cool deal!
Prime Gaming offers new free games every month, but there are always some great options during Prime Day, so be sure to check it out!

Luggage and Backpacks
With all the international travel that we do, we tend to go through some luggage. In large part, that’s because when we were getting started, we chose to go with less expensive bags instead of focusing on quality.
Prime Day means having it both ways. Be sure to grab bags for the whole family at these prices.
This set is showing at $279 on Amazon, dropping the price by over $100!
I’ve not seen many bags with this design, but it looks like it would be especially great for traveling with larger souvenirs, because of how deep the interior is.
The more popular travel backpacks like the Osprey Farpoint, don’t seem to be discounted, which is too bad. But there are quite a few commuter-style backpacks that would work well for airline travel, including from top brands like MATEIN.
Travel Organizers
Organizing your luggage means getting the most out of the space that you have, which is particularly useful when you’re traveling internationally. There are a ton of packing cubes on sale today, at a variety of price points, but I personally love the ones that can compress, like these from BAGSMART. They’re currently $10 off.
While I mostly try to make do with soap and shampoo from whatever country I’m visiting, invariably there are some toiletries that it makes more sense to bring with you. That means bringing a toiletry bag along. I prefer the small ones you can dump what you need into, but especially if you need to bring your own toiletries, there’s a lot to be said about the larger, hanging varieties as well.
Travel Tech
Earbuds
I’ve been using Skullcandy earbuds for the last year and I’ve loved them. These are significantly discounted for Prime Day.
I’m not an Apple fan. Sorry. But as these are some of the top-rated earbuds out there, I’m listing them here for comparison.
Prime Members can get these for $89.99 during Prime Day, which is a pretty significant discount.
Chargers
Speakers
We love having a Bluetooth speaker or two with us for music and audiobooks. The sound quality is better than what our phones can put out, so it’s just an all-around better experience.
It’s a bit bigger than I’d like, but this is the speaker we’ve used for years. It has great sound and can connect with other Soundcore speakers to increase sound coverage.
Smaller, clippable speakers are great for travel. JBL is known for providing great-sounding speakers, making this a deal.
This speaker adds in a decent microphone and sound cancellation tech to make it a great choice for meetings or online classes alongside its more fun uses.
I like traveling with a smart speaker, mostly because it’s what I use for timers and podcasts in the kitchen. No reason to go without just because I’m on the opposite side of the world.
The Echo Dot speaker is more than half-off, moving it under $20.
Work From Anywhere (Digital Nomad Life)
I’ve written a few different articles on different products that can be useful for nomads living a Work From Anywhere life, especially if you’re wanting to spend some time “off-grid.” Each one has a list of different items that I’ve found useful, most of which can be found on Amazon! I’ll try to keep each of them updated with my Prime Day Picks at the top for those interested. Check them out, below!
Family Field Trip Supplies
While Amazon has the best deals on their own products, there are some really good deals on lots of other everyday items as well! That means that if there’s something you’ve had your eye on for a while, like new camping gear or a camera, there’s almost certainly a deal for you!
What deals you can find vary greatly depending on what you’re looking for and when you look, so check back often to get the best deals!
Here are some ideas to get you started!
Nat Geo Stem Kits – I love these!!! Each kit has a different activity related to a STEM topic like Geology, Chemistry, or Engineering. They are amazing for adding to a field trip for some hands-on application and extended learning opportunities!

Water Filtration
While most places you visit in the States have clean water readily available, it’s not always something you can take for granted. Whether it’s on the hiking trail, traveling abroad, or dealing with the aftermath of a flood or other disaster, you never know when a water filter could come in handy.
LifeStraw is one of the leading brands in consumer water filters, and they are offering a lot of their products at a significant discount during Prime Day.
LifeStraw Go is a personal water bottle that uses LifeStraw’s filtering technology in a 22oz water bottle, making lifesaving technology even more convenient.
$19.95 for Prime Day
This is the filter that started it all! It’s lightweight and super portable, which makes it super easy to throw in a backpack or suitcase to make sure you have clean water wherever you go!
I love gravity-fed filtration systems. If you’re in need of filtering a large quantity of water for sharing with your family or making a pot of coffee, this is an easy and portable solution.
The newest version of the LifeStraw Go line is a stainless steel version of their water bottle. It isn’t getting the same steep discounts as the plastic version, but I have it here because I personally prefer drinking from stainless.
Telescope
Telescopes can get pretty pricey for a good one. Luckily there are several that are discounted for Prime Day!
USB Microscope
We love looking through microscopes with our kids, but they are still at an age where they can easily bump on unfocus ours. USB versions let you project what the microscope sees so everyone can enjoy!
Rock Tumbler
I want one of these so badly, but I have a hard time justifying bringing rocks with me in my luggage. If you aren’t as mobile as me, be sure to enjoy the discount on rock tumblers so I can live through you vicariously.
